This piece is one we've been playing for almost as long as the band has been performing. It's a melody we originally heard on a recording by Afghani musician Aziz Herawi, recorded live at a house concert in Calirfornia in 1992.

This piece is a traditional Pashtun mahali (folk melody) from Kabul. The title, SabZina Rang, is a triple reference to a woman's name, the color green, andthe verdancy of nature.

The rhythm is in 7 beats, with pauses at the end of passages where traditionally dancers would freeze in position. We loved that idea -- a "musical freeze tag" -- and have fun with it every time we play the song.

This performance was recorded live at Cranberry Lake, NY on July 19, 2008.
